Heading Back to Hausgarten

First deployment of arcFOCE during the RV "Maria S. Merian" cruise MSM77 in September / October 2018

INTAROS researchers from Alfred-Wegener-Institute | Helmholtz-Center for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) will return to the  HAUSGARTEN observatory site this summer to recover equipment deployed during the 2018 summer fieldwork season. During the last campaign aboard the RV Maria S. Merrian, researchers from AWI, Germany, deployed arcFOCE (arctic Free Ocean Carbon Enrichment) samplers to monitor acidification in the Northern Atlantic and Central Arctic Oceans.

This year, the HAUSGARTEN observatory will be extended with an experimental system to study impacts of ocean acidification on benthic organisms and communities. The arcFOCE  system will be adapted to greater water depths (4000 m), extremely low temperatures, and autonomous operation. The objective of this research is to assess the effects of future changes in ocean chemistry, including ocean cidification, on the diversity and abundance of deep-sea benthic organisms and communities.

This year, aboard the RV Polarstern, the team will travel from Bremerhaven, Germany, to Tromsø, Norway, during a mission lasting 34 days.
