Call for Papers: Ocean Acoustics in the Changing Arctic

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America is currently accepting manuscripts for a Special Issue on “Ocean Acoustics in the Changing Arctic”.

The Arctic Ocean is undergoing dramatic changes in response to increasing atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Sea ice extent and thickness have declined substantially. Warmer waters have entered the Arctic from the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans. The ocean stratification is changing. This Special Issue invites manuscripts on underwater acoustics and acoustical oceanography in the changing Arctic. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Observations and modeling of acoustic propagation, including the effects of interactions with the ice cover and seafloor
  • Acoustic remote sensing of large-scale ocean temperatures and currents (ocean acoustic tomography/thermometry)
  • Passive acoustic monitoring of natural and anthropogenic sounds
  • Under-ice navigation systems for floats, gliders, and autonomous underwater vehicles
  • Acoustic communication systems
  • Arctic geo-acoustics
  • Comparisons of current Arctic acoustic conditions with historical data.

If you have any questions about your intended paper, please email the Guest Editors.

Deadline for manuscripts is 31 March 2021

Accepted papers will be published in the next available regular issue of the journal and identified as belonging to this Special Issue. After all Special Issue articles have been published, they will all be listed in an online collection for the Special Issue on the JASA website.
