INTAROS at Arctic Circle 2017

The Arctic Circle conference in Reykjavik has become an important meeting place for Arctic organsations, policy makers, regional and local communities, businesses as well as scientists and funding agencies. The conference was attended by more that 2000 participants from 13 to 15 October in Harpa, Iceland’s largest concert hall, proving excellent facilities for such event. The opening speech was given by the President of Iceland, Guðni Th.Jóhannesson, giving the conference a high profile. Furthermore, the chairman of Arctic Circle is former president of Iceland Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, who has been host for this conference which has been held annual since 2013.

 INTAROS was represented as part of the EU Arctic Cluster, which had a stand during the three days of the conference. The Cluster consists of eight EU-funded projects, all of them were present at the conference. INTAROS was also specifically presented and mentioned in several sessions:

  • “Scales of Observations – connecting Arctic data, information and people” by S. Sandven. The session was led by Peter Pulsifer.
  • “Country session - Poland and the Arctic” where A. Beszczynska-Möller gave an overview of the major Arctic ocean research activities in Poland,
  • “Sensing the Arctic with autonomous underwater vechicles” by Michel Rixen from World Climate Research Programme
  • “Climate service innovation and enhancing climate-resilience in Arctic businesses”, by Øyvin Aarnes from DnV GL
  • “Increasing international cooperation on Arctic science via ministerial meetings” by Andrea Tilche, head of climate action and Earth Observation Unit in European Commission, DG Research and Innovation.
